Purchasing a media package has become quite a rare event in the past years. As professional tools have become subscription based, it appears that the industry is adopting the MMO games model. Luckily for people who do not want a subscription in order to use a video editing program (and neither want to sell their soul for it) Sony has released their thirteenth release of Vegas Pro.
Vegas Pro is a video production program that combines professional tools with a user friendly interface. The interface is split into large sections and the most commonly used functions have a dedicate button on the bottom of the window. Tinkering with audio and video tracks is as easy as adding them to your project. Each track has a header that contains different controls specific to its type. From there you can play with levels, motion blur, volume, sound panning and more. The track themselves can be manipulated by dragging their edges to change opacity and level and type of offset.
The preview panel allows you to navigate the tracks as well as recording audio while playing.
Vegas has a generous library of transitions, video effects and media generators. You can browse through them easily and also check a preview of each one just by hovering the cursor over it. With media generators you can use solid colors or textures to overlay existing images and even add credits rolls without having to resort to an external animation program.
You can analyze colors using video scopes which translate video data into real time graphs that help you identify the positions where you need to adjust color levels. In regards to sounds, there is an audio mixer and a master level control that is always visible.
What's absolutely great about Vegas Pro is that it has a very comprehensive index and contents help along with a tutorial system that shows you what's what. This can ease the learning curve and help you get familiar with the interface in no time.

Vegas Pro 13 might not be a good choice if you already use an earlier version, since there are too few improvements in regards to regular usefulness.
